A mirror shine is not vanity — it is a protective shell of wax that seals the leather against water, salt and scuffs. Start with a clean, dry shoe and a coat of cream polish worked in small circles.
Then build the shine in thin layers: dab on hard wax with a cloth wrapped tight around two fingers, add a drop of water, and buff. Repeat. The toe cap and heel counter take the most layers because they take the most punishment.
Finish with a horsehair brush and a soft flannel. Twenty minutes, once a month, and your oxfords will reflect the room.
